The City of Camden

Camden is a historic town located in the Macarthur region of South West Sydney.

Explorers first visited the area in 1795 and named it ‘Cowpastures’ after an escaped herd of cattle was discovered there.

In the early 1800s, Governor John Macarthur was granted a parcel of land where he and his wife Elizabeth built Camden Park. This grand Georgian house and Victorian-style garden are open to visitors once a year during the open weekend in Spring.

The region is home to a number of other significant historic homes, as well as the Australian Botanic Gardens at Mount Annan that incorporates The Plant Bank, one of only three national seed banks in the world.

Camden is the fastest-growing Local Government Area in Australia, attracting an average of 170 new residents to the area every week.
