Renowned for having the largest rail museum in Australia and one of the oldest freshwater lake systems at Thirlmere Lakes, Wollondilly is a diverse area just over an hour from Sydney.
Wollondilly Shire contains several small towns and villages such as Picton, Appin, and Thirlmere, and is dotted with farms – including the popular farm stay, Mowbray Farm -sandstone gorges, and swimming holes such as the Mermaid Pool. To its west is wilderness and including the Nattai Wilderness and the Burragorang Valley.
The majority of the Wollondilly Shire is a national park or forms part of the water catchment for Sydney’s water supply, an area that provides 97 percent of Sydney’s water supply.
The Wollondilly Shire capital of Picton is accessible on the Southern Highland train line.
